Questa poesia è una vera e propria metafora.
La vita è come un fucile carico, pronto a far esplodere la propria energia non appena qualcuno, o qualcosa, la risveglia dagli angoli in cui è poggiata, inerte. Da quel momento segue il suo padrone nel vagabondaggio in mezzo alla natura. Il fucile diventa la voce di chi lo porta con sé; spara nella caccia alla cerva, facendo risuonare l'eco delle montagne con una splendente e vigorosa luce che somiglia all'eruzione di un vulcano che lasci libera la sua gioia di erompere. E a sera, quando la bella giornata passata insieme è ormai finita, quanto è dolce vegliare su di lui, più dolce che condividere il profondo cuscino di soffici piume che accoglie il suo capo. Nessuno gli farà del male, perché per il fucile è un nemico chiunque lo sia del suo padrone, e nessuno riuscirà a muoversi più di una volta se capita a tiro della sua canna, che si illumina nello sparo, e del suo grilletto, un energico pollice che non perdona. E sebbene il fucile non possa essere toccato dalla morte, potendola soltanto dare, è il padrone che deve vivere più a lungo di lui, perché non si ha il potere di vivere se non si ha quello di morire.
Molte le interpretazioni di "The Owner", può essere Dio, che dà alla vita il suo soffio divino ma ci vieta allo stesso tempo di porre fine ad essa se non quando lui lo vuole; o il potere patriarcale che relega la donna a soggetto passivo e adorante; o l'amato, che permette il fiorire di una ardente passione; o la poesia, che dà al poeta il potere di esternare i propri sentimenti.
Secondo me le più plausibili sono le ultime due, non come alternative in una sorta di simbiosi che lega insieme il sentimento più ardente che si possa provare con il dono più bello che si possa avere: quello di saper esternare le proprie sensazioni e le proprie passioni; un dono che, come nel caso di E.D., diventa anche un mezzo per vivere quei sentimenti che spesso dobbiamo reprimere, o che non riusciamo a cogliere durante la nostra vita. Insomma, il fucile-poeta, strumento della poesia, e il fucile-amante, che si consegna come docile strumento nelle mani dell'amore.
